SC2: Making a basic Hero

People love to level up things. Anything between turrets to heroes should be able to level up. It usually makes things a bit more fun, adds purpose and goals.

There are basically two ways to make a level-able Hero character in the Galaxy Editor. With Triggers or with the built-in Veterancy system. Depending on what you want to do, one or the other might fit your map better.

The first step to make a hero is to duplicate the unit that you want to make a hero out of.

  • Go to the Data Editor and Search/Select the unit you want to have as a hero.
  • Right click – Duplicate Unit
  • Check the top Zergling and the Zergling in Actors. These two things you want to duplicate. You want to duplicate the Actor – Zergling because you can only assign unit to each actor, so it makes it easier to duplicate it now rather than later. The rest of the things can be linked(not checked) instead of duplicated.
  • Double click the automatically named Zergling Copy to change the name to something more hero like. You can also change the Object Type to “Hero”, instead of Unit. The Rest is for organizational purposes. When done, press OK
  • Change “Unit: Flags” and “Unit: Attributes” to include the Hero tag.

Things are usually named in a logical fashion so you can play around a bit with changing a lot of settings for your new Zergling Hero.

The next thing to do is to make a leveling system and think about how you want your hero to level up. How many levels you need, skills, attributes, stuff like that.
